Child soldiers patrol C. African Republic capital

BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) ? As fighters in fatigues lounge in the shade of the rebel camp in the capital of Central African Republic, a boy jumps up to greet visitors with a wide toothy grin. He says he is 14 and joined the rebels three months ago.

It is the wrong thing to say. A female commander in uniform warns him: "We'll kill you if you talk to them."

Her boss, armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, gets up from his plastic chair, stares at the boy who had been playing in the grass moments before and declares: "There are no children here."

Despite the rebel's denial, the United Nations children's agency warns that it has "clear evidence of the continuing recruitment and use of children by armed groups" in Central African Republic.

And an Associated Press reporter saw dozens of youths among the ranks of the Seleka fighters in the capital, Bangui, more than three weeks after the insurgents caused the president to flee the country.

They were riding in pickup trucks with other rebels and in some cases on foot patrol, always closely supervised by older, heavily armed fighters.

Child soldiers were even used in some of the heaviest fighting in the battle for Bangui. They directly engaged troops from South Africa in and around the capital from March 22-24, according to South African soldiers who survived the fighting that left 13 of their comrades dead.

"It was only after the firing had stopped that we saw we had killed kids. We did not come here for this . to kill kids," one paratrooper later told the Sunday Times newspaper in South Africa.

"It makes you sick. They were crying calling for help . calling for (their) moms."

South African Defense Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said the soldiers from her country had no choice but to shoot back at the children who were firing at them.

"If our soldiers were attacked by children they were correct to defend themselves," she said, according to the South African Press Association. "If a child shoots at you, are you going to ... blow kisses?"

Those who recruit children under the age of 15 to serve in combat can be indicted on war crimes charges, and the International Criminal Court already has convicted one former Congolese warlord of conscripting young fighters.

Soldiers as young as 10 have been used by rebels not only as combatants but also as sex slaves, porters and cooks, according to the U.N.

"Recruiting children is both morally unacceptable and prohibited under international law," said Souleymane Diabate, UNICEF's country representative. "We have called on the new leadership in CAR to ensure that all children associated with armed groups should be released immediately and protected from further violations. "

Even before the latest rebellion launched in December, UNICEF said more than 2,000 children in Central African Republic were with the myriad of armed groups destabilizing the country's north.

The practice is ingrained here in one of the continent's poorest countries. The new Minister of Youth and Sports in Central African Republic comes from a rebel group that has been accused of conscripting child soldiers.

In a country where life expectancy for men is a mere 49 years and many children are put to work at an early age, the rebels in Central African Republic don't view 14 as too young to carry ? and shoot ? an AK-47 automatic assault rifle.

The government's new information minister, Christophe Gazam Betty, insisted that his government believes only about 40 child soldiers are still with the Seleka fighters.

"If there are combatants who are under the age of 18, there is a system in place through the United Nations," he said. "They will be separated and picked up by UNICEF."

UNICEF says the rebel groups who make up the alliance now in power have previously disarmed child soldiers, and the U.N. children's agency is now calling for that process to start immediately.

Some child soldiers can be returned to their families or to other relatives. Others will be placed in foster homes where possible, though some will be given training on living independently, said Shannon Struthers, UNICEF senior adviser for emergencies.

Many will need counseling and help after actively taking part in combat, Struthers said.

Amazon reportedly launching in Russia, goes on Kindle-related hiring spree

Amazon reportedly launching in Russia, goes on Kindlerelated hiring spree

Amazon is fleshing out its international empire. The company has already conquered the US, Japan, UK and Canada, and has even launched an ebook assault on the Chinese mainland. Now it looks like the online giant has settled on its next target: Russia. According to a report in the Russian edition of Forbes, the Goodreads purchaser has just set up shop in the former Soviet heartland and brought on Arkady Vitrouk (former CEO of ABC-Atticus) as director of Kindle Content for the region. Amazon hasn't officially confirmed the move, but Vitrouk has updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect his new ebook-focused title. Scouring the professional social network reveals listings for a few other Kindle-related positions in the country, including a number of jobs focused on content acquisition -- an important step in the lead up to launch. There's no indication that free two-day shipping or streaming video will be coming to Russia anytime soon, but the ereader market seems as good a place as any to start a quest for dominance.

Keep it Flowing With A Fuel Filter Replacement At B-Town Automotive

The function of the fuel filter is pretty self-explanatory. It filters your fuel. The fuel filter is in the fuel line somewhere in between the fuel tank and the engine. Both gas and diesel vehicles around Berthoud Colorado use fuel filters.

For more information about your fuel filter, visit B-Town Automotive or come by our shop located at 912 2nd Street, Unit A in Berthoud, Colorado 80513.
Please call 970-532-2009 to make an appointment.

Generally speaking there?s not a lot of dirt in our Berthoud Colorado auto fuel supply, but there is enough that you want to screen it out. The problem actually gets worse the older your vehicle becomes. That?s because dirt, rust and other contaminants will settle out of the fuel and onto the bottom of the fuel tank. After your SUV is five years or older, it can actually have a fair amount of sediment built up.

That just means that the fuel filter has to work harder as your SUV ages. It?ll get clogged sooner and need to be replaced more often.

A symptom of a clogged fuel filter is that the engine sputters at highway speeds or under hard acceleration. That?s because enough fuel is getting through around town, but when you need more fuel for speed, enough just can?t get through the filter. Obviously, that could be dangerous if your car or truck can?t get enough power to get you out of harm?s way.

For just that reason, fuel filters have a bypass valve. When the filter is severely clogged, some fuel can bypass the filter all together. Of course that means that dirty, unfiltered fuel is getting through to be burned in the engine.

This dirt can then clog and damage your fuel injectors. Now injectors are not cheap to replace, so you don?t want to cause them damage just because you didn?t spend a few bucks to replace a fuel filter.

You know, in a way, the fuel filter can be the poster child for preventive maintenance. It?s a little part, it?s simple and it?s cheap to take care of. But if it?s neglected, it could lead to thousands of dollars of repair bills.

Those auto service schedules in your owner?s manual are there for a reason. If ever you don?t understand a recommended service, just ask your Berthoud service advisor at B-Town Automotive. We?ll be happy to explain.

When it comes to survival of the fittest, stress is a good thing, squirrel study shows

Apr. 18, 2013 ? When the woods get crowded, female squirrels improve their offspring's odds of survival by ramping up how fast their offspring grow.

In a study led by Michigan State University and the University of Guelph (Canada), researchers showed for the first time how females use social cues to correctly prepare their offspring for life outside the nest. The results, published in the current issue of Science, confirm that red squirrel mothers boosted stress hormone production during pregnancy, which increased the size and the chances of survival of their pups.

"Natural selection favors faster-growing offspring, and female red squirrels react accordingly to increase their pups' chances of survival," said Ben Dantzer, formerly with MSU's zoology department and now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). "Surprisingly, squirrels could produce these faster growing offspring even though they didn't have access to additional food resources."

Proving that food availability isn't always the universal variable affecting population dynamics took a true team effort. It was equal parts field physiology, experimental ecology and longitudinal studies of natural selection that led to these findings, he added.

The team based much of its study on the Kluane Red Squirrel Project, a 22-year-long study on North American red squirrels living in the Yukon led by researchers from the University of Alberta (Canada), Guelph and McGill University (Canada). Out in the field, researchers used recordings of territorial vocalizations, or rattles, to create the illusion of a big population of squirrels.

Females reacted to the increased commotion by producing more stress hormones while pregnant and their pups grew faster. Dantzer, along with Amy Newman of the University of Guelph, also manipulated stress hormone levels in mothers to conclusively show that stress hormones were the cause of the faster growth rates of their pups.

"Despite the widespread perception that being stressed is bad, our study shows that high stress hormone levels in mothers can actually help their offspring," Dantzer said.

The research also showed that these changes were immediate rather than happening over multiple generations, said Andrew McAdam of Guelph University.

"When population density is high, only the fastest-growing offspring survive," said McAdam, who supervised Dantzer when they both were at MSU. "Our study also showed that rather than simply exhibiting lagged responses to environmental changes, the red squirrels may anticipate environmental changes using cues they pick up on during pregnancy."

The squirrels then are able to make adjustments in their offspring, allowing the pups to better survive, he added.

While researchers found that female squirrels could use hormones to help the early survival of their offspring, the pups may not be so lucky in the long-term. Offspring born during these high-density years don't live as long. This suggests that their successful early sprint burns a few matches that would have helped them in the marathon of life.

Additional researchers who contributed to this paper include: Rudy Boonstra, University of Toronto; Rupert Palme, University of Veterinary Medicine (Austria); Stan Boutin, University of Alberta; and Murray Humphries of McGill University.

The research was funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

Colorado Sports Hall of Fame to induct former greats

Don Baylor and Stan Williams provide a major baseball influence for Thursday night's Colorado Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet at the Denver Marriott City Center.

Baylor ushered in major-league baseball as the first manager of the Rockies in 1993. Williams came out of Denver East High School in 1954, signed a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers and became a member of one of baseball's strongest starting pitching rotations. The hard-throwing right-hander was the first Colorado baseball prospect to make it big in the major leagues.

By the time Williams moved up to the Dodgers in 1958, the team had moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. His pitching partners were Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Johnny Podres. Koufax and Drysdale have been inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

"Koufax was unbelievable," Williams said. "He always picked the day to pitch when the other team wasn't going to score any runs."

Williams posted a 109-94 record in 15 major-league seasons while pitching for six teams, including the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians. After his playing days, Williams stayed in baseball as a pitching coach and a scout until 2010.

Baylor, the hitting coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, will always have a special place in Rockies history.

"It was the right time and place for me when I came to the Rockies," Baylor said in a phone interview this week. "I became part of the baseball history there. It was a great ride. Everybody had their arms around us cheering for us. No one could ever forget our first game in Mile High Stadium."

Others being inducted Thursday are Broncos safety Steve Atwater, defenseman Adam Foote of the Avalanche and golfer Steve Jones, who excelled at the University of Colorado and won the 1996 U.S. Open.
