(AP) ? Timothy Michael Poe won over the crowd and the judges of NBC's "America's Got Talent" even before he began to sing, with his moving story of blocking a grenade blast in 2009 to save his buddies in Afghanistan ? an act of heroism he said broke his back and left him with a brain injury.

When a judge remarked during the episode broadcast Monday on the disappearance of Poe's stutter during his cover of a Garth Brooks song, he spun another tale: He discovered his talent only after his speech therapist suggested he sing in the shower to help with the stutter.

The truth, according to an ex-wife, was that Poe not only was never hurt on the battlefield, he had been singing "pretty much his whole life" and spent four years fronting an alternative rock and cover band in Rochester, Minn. A MySpace page last updated in February 2009 for the Rochester band Crawl Space lists Poe as vocalist.

Singing was the least of Poe's fictions, according to the Minnesota Army National Guard, which has issued statements contradicting Poe's account on the television show, igniting a firestorm online, especially among veterans and on military blogs, over Poe allegedly claiming glory and sympathy to which he's not entitled.

The Guard says its records show Poe never was injured in combat in Afghanistan or Iraq.

"It's embarrassing for me and it's embarrassing for his children and it's embarrassing for the military," said Shannon Conroy, who was married to Poe from November 2005 until this April.

In the "America's Got Talent" episode that aired Monday, Poe told judges Howie Mandel, Howard Stern and Sharon Osbourne that he spent 14 years in the military that included being attacked in Afghanistan.

"I had volunteered for a team to go out and clear buildings and help out with the wounded," Poe said during a taped interview on the show. "There was a guy who comes up with a rocket-propelled grenade. I saw it coming down, and by the time I turned and went to jump on top of my guys, I yelled 'grenade' and the blast had hit me."

Poe has declined multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press. Military records show he served with the Guard from December 2002 through May 2011, as a supply specialist. They show he was deployed in Kosovo from October 2007 to July 2008, and then served in Afghanistan for about a month in mid-2009. The sergeant was honorably discharged in 2011 because of a medical disability.

"His voice, and the fact that he was in the military, the true part, should've been enough to get him by," Conroy said. "His singing alone is amazing, and I will never doubt that, but he goes a little too far."

The 35-year-old San Antonio, Texas, man claimed when he spoke to WFAA-TV of Dallas last month that he was also wounded in Iraq in 2005, when his truck was hit by a roadside bomb.

In a detailed rebuttal Thursday, Lt. Col Kevin Olson, a spokesman for the Minnesota Army National Guard, wrote that none of the military records that Poe's fianc?e, Carrie Morris, provided to reporters back up his claims that he was ever injured in combat. However, he said, other documents indicate Poe suffered the injury that led to his medical retirement while training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana in mid-July 2009 before he deployed to Afghanistan. He also said there were no official records showing that he ever deployed to Iraq or was injured there. He said Poe reported to Camp Shelby in Mississippi "for pre-mobilization training on Sept. 21, 2005, but ultimately did not deploy" to Iraq.

Conroy told the AP that Poe broke his back in November 2005 in Mississippi, and was treated at Fort Benning in Georgia until March 2006, when he returned to Minnesota for back surgery. She said Poe was in Afghanistan for a short time in 2009, then went to Germany for medical treatment.

The ex-wife said she got "very conflicting stories" from him and people in his unit about what he was treated for. She says Poe told her a rocket-propelled grenade had gone off near his convoy, while people in his unit told her Poe was never hurt in battle and instead had been injured during a training exercise before he went to Afghanistan and then experienced symptoms of the same problem while deployed.

In another discrepancy, it was confirmed Thursday that Poe gave "America's Got Talent" and WFAA a photograph of another soldier and passed it off as himself. The caption of the original picture on the official military website Defense.gov says it shows Staff Sgt. Norman Bone serving in Afghanistan in 2006. Morris said Poe accidentally submitted the photo because he was in a hurry and didn't take the time to look at which picture he was sending.

"It was a complete accident," Morris said.

Morris said Poe "feels like America is turning their back on him" and that it's hard for her to listen to all the attacks.

"It's hard. I'm about to marry this man," Morris said. "He is a good father. He is a good man. He is a good friend."

Poe is being savaged by veterans and on military blogs and in social media.

Nick Colgin, a medic who earned a Bronze Star for valor during his 15-month deployment in Afghanistan, said fabricated tales of heroism dishonor other veterans whose service goes unnoticed.

"There's 2.4 million veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq and for someone to go on national TV and bring disrespect to them and their service ? it's inexcusable," said Colgin, who came home in 2008 with a brain injury after a rocket-propelled grenade hit the side of his Humvee.

John Kriesel served in Iraq until a roadside bomb hit his Humvee, killing two of his buddies and costing him both of his legs.

"He was a veteran. He has nothing to make up. Being a veteran is honorable," Kriesel said. "Why lie about what you've done?"

It's unclear whether Poe could face any legal action. While the federal Stolen Valor Act allows prosecution when people make false claims about receiving medals, Poe didn't say anything about medals in passages that have aired. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule within a few weeks on whether the law is constitutional.

Kriesel said he hopes someone does prosecute Poe if he lied about his service.

"The thing I think is funny is he lied to become famous," Kriesel said. "He got his wish, he's all over the news now and I don't think it's for the reasons he wanted."

No. 1 with a title? Sharapova makes French final

PARIS (AP) ? One victory Thursday finished Maria Sharapova's climb back to the top of the tennis rankings.

With one more on Saturday, she'll be the French Open champion and complete a career Grand Slam.

Not a bad way to spend springtime in Paris.

Sharapova defeated Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-3 in the windblown semifinals at Roland Garros. The second-seeded Russian needs a victory over 21st-seeded Sara Errani, a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 winner over No. 6 Samantha Stosur, to become the 10th woman to win all four major tournaments.

"I always dreamed of being on the final stage here and I finally have that opportunity," Sharapova said. "And I'm more than excited."

When she won match point on a second-serve ace, Sharapova raised her palms to the sky, looked up and smiled ? one of the sport's biggest stars letting the fans and photographers share a special moment.

Sharapova has long been the headliner at almost any tournament she enters, though this latest win will officially put her on the top line of the women's rankings when the new list comes out Monday.

It's a perch that may have felt unreachable three years ago, when the Russian was recovering from shoulder surgery and dropped as low as 126th.

But from that point, she has made a steady climb back. This year, she has won two tournaments and finished runner-up in three more, including the Australian Open. That, plus the performance at Roland Garros, has helped push her back to No. 1, the spot she first captured in 2005 and held for 17 non-consecutive weeks, the last on June 8, 2008.

"It's pretty special," Sharapova said. "A few years ago after my shoulder surgery, I don't know if I had a ranking, but it was over 100. And I thought 'Well, I did it one time. So maybe again, I can try to do it.'"

Her match against fourth-seeded Kvitova, who defeated Sharapova in the Wimbledon final last year, wasn't exactly a walk in the park, but Kvitova struggled with the blustery wind more than her opponent did. And she couldn't get a handle on Sharapova's serve. The Russian placed 78 percent of her first serves in.

"It's tough to return her," Kvitova said. "She plays very fast. It's a different game compared to matches before."

Trailing 4-3 and 40-30 in the second set, Kvitova hit an aggressive return that the chair umpire ruled missed the baseline. A short argument ensued and after the changeover, Kvitova kept glancing at the spot where she thought the ball hit. She went from 30-love in that game to losing the last four points, and Sharapova's last service game was academic ? and punctuated with that ace on her second serve.

Next up is Errani, who played a terrible second set against Stosur but took advantage when the U.S. Open champion got a case of the nerves and started hitting balls five and 10 feet out in the final set.

"It's a semifinal of a slam," Stosur said. "Of course you're going to be nervous."

When her win was complete, Errani toppled to her back and onto the soft, red clay, then looked up to the players guest box, where there was an elated mix of smiles and tears.

"It's incredible for me," Errani said. "I didn't expect it, and I'm here. So, I don't know what to say."

Stosur committed 48 unforced errors, including 21 in the final set, while Errani simply chased and got the ball back, making only 21 unforced errors over the entire match.

Many of Errani's serves spun in at the 70-80 mph range. She finished the match with no aces, compared to 11 for Stosur, and set aside the thought, at least for one day, that power players with power games are the only ones who win big matches at Grand Slam tournaments. The debate will be resumed Saturday when she plays Sharapova. Given the way the past two weeks have gone, there's no counting out the Italian.

Entering Roland Garros, Errani was 0-28 against opponents in the top 10.

Now, she has back-to-back wins against No. 10 Angelique Kerber and No. 6 Stosur, along with victories over past French Open champions Ana Ivanovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Which means that on the same day Sharapova officially vaults to No. 1, Errani will reach the top 10 for the first time.

"Maybe my problem always was that I couldn't believe too much to win with the strong players," she said. "But now I beat three in a row. I'm in the final in a Grand Slam. So I have to maybe try to think a bit different."

The Xbox 360?s motion tracking Kinect was presented as an ideal substitute for the watchful eyes of Nike?s own elite physical fitness experts.

The Nike+ Kinect Training program can synchronize with mobile phones to keep users motivated with regular updates and reminders.

It will be released towards the end of 2012 and joins a wide range of health and fitness titles already available.

The Biggest Loser has enjoyed success by coupling mainstream recognition with ambitious weight-loss targets, and Zumba Fitness has explored Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii.

EA Sports targeted fitness enthusiasts with EA Sports Active 2.0 while THQ?s UFC Personal Trainer was even more combative in its approach.

Firefox 13

There's little that other browsers can do that Firefox can't. It has lots of HTML5 support, the best extension and customization capability, and its unique Panorama tab organizer. But for several years, Mozilla's open-source Web browser has been missing something found in every other major browser: a helpful new-tab page. Firefox 13 fills this gap, not only adding tiles for most-accessed sites on the new-tab page, but including lots more settings on the home page. And the new version isn't just about tabs: It also gets speedups for startup and browsing, and thriftier memory usage. Read on for a closer look at where Firefox has been and where it's at with this hardly unlucky version 13.

Earlier releases have brought bigger changes that will be welcomed by many users. In version 9, performance was improved Mac OS X Lion operation and appearance improved. We also got better "Do Not Track" privacy support, and improved HTML5 standard support. Firefox 7 added better use of memory, addressing one of the most common complaints I've heard about Firefox over the past few years. It also sped up startup times, in which Firefox has long trialed competing browsers.

It still holds true that the big interface changes all came along in version 4. Mozilla started emulating Google's Chrome (free, 4.5 stars) Web browser in JavaScript speed and minimalist interface, as competitors Internet Explorer 9 (free, 4 stars) and Opera 11.50 (free, 4 stars) have.

Firefox 13 can nearly match Chrome on JavaScript speed, and holds its own when it comes to HTML5 support and a trimmed down interface that gives the Web page center stage. But when compared side-by-side with Chrome, Firefox falls just a bit short in terms of HTML5 support and whiz-bang features like Chrome Instant, which loads pages from your history before you even finish typing their addresses or search terms in the address bar.

Install
A simple 16MB download gets you the Firefox 13 Windows installer. When you run it you'll lose your old version of Firefox. The latest Firefox is available for Mac (30MB) and Linux (17MB) as well as for Windows 7, Vista, and XP?the last of which even Internet Explorer 9 (Free, 4 stars) can't claim. You can import bookmarks from any other installed browsers on first run, but setup is nearly as uncomplicated as it is for Chrome. Firefox also now makes it easy to choose a search provider other than Google, but surprisingly, not as easy as Chrome does. Mozilla also offers a Firefox with Bing version, which uses Microsoft's Web search built in.

Mozilla has been working towards silent updates for Firefox since at least the summer of 2010. And version 13 is the first to actually take advantage of this effort. The problem, on Windows, anyway, is the security need for the OS to display the User Access dialog upon making installation file changes. Google Chrome gets around this by installing in a non-standard, non program folder, which some consider a potential security risk. Firefox takes another route, using a "service" rather than a standard program process for the update to avoid the UAC dialog.

The first time you run Firefox, you'll see the "Select Your Add-ons" dialog. This is so that you can see any add-ons that may have been installed unbeknownst to you by another app you installed. After this first extension approval, the browser will no longer allow third-party app installations to install Firefox extensions without your approval.

Interface
Firefox's interface is in line with the trend of "less is more"?less space taken up by the browser frame and controls and more space for Web pages. The page tabs have moved above the address bar, and, as with Opera 11.60, there's just a single menu option in the form of the orange Firefox button at top left. You can re-enable the standard menus by hitting the Alt key.

Most of the current interface started with Firefox 4, but with Firefox 13 a key interface update arrives: Firefox's new new-tab page, as in a lot of other things, mimics Google Chrome most closely. As in Chrome and Opera, Firefox's new tab page shows thumbnails of your most recently and frequently visited sites.

And as in the other browsers, you can customize what's on these thumbnails, and they shrink and enlarge as you resize the browser window. You can also remove sites and pin and unpin them to the new tab page. But you can't specify which sites to include: They're chosen by frequency of your visits. It's not quite up to the level of Safari's beautiful 3D Top Sites page or Opera's Speed Dial, which even offers live information on its pinned tiles. But it's a start, and it's good to see that Firefox finally helps you out a little when you open a new tab. If on the other hand, you don't want this view, a button at top right turns it off, reverting to the plain white, blank page.

Where Google's browser only offers your most visited sites, Web apps, and recently closed tabs, the large icons on Firefox's new homepage give access to bookmarks, history, settings, add-ons, downloads, and sync preferences with shortcuts. If you've changed your home page, you can get to this new one by typing about:home in the address bar.

The Mac version of Firefox integrates well with Apple's latest desktop operating system, Mac OS X Lion. Mozilla's browser supports the OS's two- and three-finger swiping gestures for moving between apps and pages in full screen, and the theme design matches Lion's toolbar and icon stylings.

The Home button is to the right of the search bar, and a bookmark button appears to the right of that. That bookmark button only appears when you don't want the bookmark toolbar taking up browser window space. This gives you one-click access to frequently needed Web addresses. But I wish that, like IE's star button, Firefox also let you see recent page history. You can still call up the full bookmark manager, which lets you do things like importing bookmarks from other browsers, search, and organize.

Firefox is one of the last remaining browsers to still use separate address and search boxes, which is good for those who like to keep those two activities separate. That doesn't mean, however, that a search won't work in the address bar, aka the "awesome bar." That tool, which drops down suggestions from your history and favorites whenever you start typing, was pioneered by Firefox and copied by all other browsers. Another tweak is that when one of its suggested sites is already open in a tab, you can click on a "Switch to tab" link, preventing you from opening more tabs unnecessarily?a useful tweak.

As part of its leading extensibility, Firefox has always been the browser most open to allowing different search providers, including specialized search like shopping, reference, or social. It was one of the first to support the OpenSearch format. The other popular browsers now do so, too, but Firefox can automatically detect search services on a page and let you add them from the search bar. With version 8, the social search category was bolstered by the built in addition of a Twitter search, making it easy to follow trending topics or to find Twitter personalities worth following.

Poll: Political independents outweigh partisans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Call it a pox on both the Republican and Democratic houses.

More Americans now call themselves politically independent than at any point in the last 75 years, according to a new poll. The survey also shows that those who do align themselves with a party are more ideological and have become more polarized than at any point in the last 25 years, particularly on issues important in this year's presidential and congressional campaigns.

Party loyalty, however, only goes so far; neither Republicans nor Democrats say their own party is doing a good job standing up for its traditional positions.

Five months before the November elections, the Pew Research Center poll released Monday sheds light on how the electorate feels about the nation's two major political parties. And sour seems to be an understatement.

The results indicate a collective thumbs down to both the Democratic and Republican Party, showing that an unprecedented 38 percent of adults rejected both parties and call themselves independents. Only 32 percent now say they are Democrats and 24 percent now call themselves Republicans.

This flight away from the two major political parties began in 2008, a time of intense partisanship as President Barack Obama battled Republican Sen. John McCain for the White House.

Then as now, independent voters are a critical constituency that candidates must win over to prevail in competitive general elections.

Exit polls show these voters have sided with the winning candidate in all but two of the past 10 presidential elections. Independents broke for Obama, 52 percent to 44 percent for McCain four years ago. And recent polling suggests independents are about evenly divided now between Obama and Mitt Romney, his likely Republican rival.

Independent voters also have been on the winning side in congressional contests eight out of nine times since the 1994 election, when Republicans took control of the House for the first time in 40 years.

So both Republicans and Democrats are making serious plays to win them over.

The survey found that the face of the independent voter also is changing, posing challenges for Democrats.

More Hispanic and younger voters ? key Democratic voting blocs ? say they are politically independent and Republicans are aggressively courting them.

Hispanics who describe themselves as independents have jumped from 31 percent in 2006 to 46 percent now. And nearly half of Americans born since 1981 now say they are independents.

To be sure, 56 percent of Americans still identify themselves as a member of either the Democratic or the Republican parties.

But the parties are pushing out those in the ideological middle.

The vast majority of Republicans, 68 percent, say they are conservative, up from 60 percent in 2000. And the conservative Democrat has become scarce as the share of self-described liberals in the party has grown 10 points since 2000, from 28 percent to 38 percent. As the moderates abandon both parties, the poll finds partisans' views on the major issues in this year's campaign have become more deeply polarized since the Pew Center first measured those views in 1987.

The poll measured opinions on 48 different questions about basic political values, and found Democrats and Republicans farther apart than at any point since 1987.

The sharpest differences between partisans fall mostly on the issues at the core of this year's campaign regarding government's role and effectiveness: whether regulation helps or hurts business, how involved government should be in people's lives and whether government programs are effective or wasteful. Sharp differences also centered on the question of how much of a "social safety net" government should provide ? whether government should make sure every citizen's basic needs are met or take care of those in need even if it means more debt.

Shifting opinions on these issues are not limited to core partisans: Independents who lean toward either Republicans or Democrats are also more sharply polarized from each other than they were 25 years ago, particularly on how much government should do and how effective it is.

Obama holds a slim edge over Romney in the poll, 49 percent to 45 percent, among registered voters, and the results suggest the sharpest divides between Romney and Obama supporters are over the role and effectiveness of government.

About one-fourth of voters are "swing voters," or those who are not firmly committed to a candidate. Ideologically, this group is closer to Romney on the social safety net, but closer to Obama on social issues and questions about labor unions. They fall about evenly between the two on the role of government.

The poll also found a liberal shift on social issues in recent decades, with fewer saying they hold old-fashioned values about family and marriage, or the role of women.

The Pew Research Center 2012 Values Survey was conducted by telephone April 4-15 among a random national sample of 3,008 adults. Interviews were conducted by live interviews and respondents were reached on landline and cellular telephones. The margin of sampling error for results based on all interviews is plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

World-Class Athletes Are Pre-Performance-Enhanced

Performance Enhancing Drugs, Steroids, Professional Sports, London Olympics, Tour de France,Baseball, Basketball, Image: Matt Collins

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

The London Olympic Games and the Tour de France are on the horizon in Europe. Here in North America, the baseball season is under way, with football soon to follow. All of which means that around the world, in gleaming state-of-the-art facilities and dingy state-of-the-meth-lab basements, chemists are hard at work making molecules for athletes to swallow, snort, apply and inject into one another?s butts.

Almost all sports fans decry the use of performance-enhancing drugs. It?s cheating. It gives the user attributes he or she did not rightfully earn. It just feels wrong to most fans. It feels wrong to me. But I have a question that almost inevitably leads to heated arguments?which leads me to suspect that we?re dealing with deep emotional issues as much as intellectual analysis.

My question is: Why is it not questionable for a Boston Red Sox team doctor to have surgically and temporarily stabilized Curt Schilling?s peroneus brevis tendon by suturing it into deep connective tissue before Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees? (The jerry-rigged nature of what is now called the ?Schilling tendon procedure? begat the Beantown-blessed bloody sock.)

Okay, the question is usually worded more like this: ?Sure, steroids are cheating, but why was it legal for them to sew Curt Schilling?s ankle together for a few hours just so he could pitch?? If I, a Yankees fan, put the question to a Red Sox fan, I quickly add, over my shoulder, ?Stop chasing me with that fireplace poker, I?m not saying it wasn?t okay, I just wanna know why it was.?

Barry Bonds, who allegedly used so many steroids that other hitters looking to beef up could just lick him, probably ruined his chances for admission to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Schilling?s bloody sock is already on display there.

Pitcher Mordecai Brown mangled his hand in a piece of farming equipment, which earned him the nickname ?Three-Finger? but made his curveball better. Pitcher Antonio Alfonseca?s hereditary polydactyly gave him six fingers per hand. Do we need a five-finger rule?

Furthermore, why is ?Tommy John surgery? okeydoke? When I was a boy, when a pitcher?s arm fell off, he just pitched with his other arm. Sorry, I slipped into caricature-old-man mode for a second there. Let me try again.

When I was a kid, if a pitcher suffered damage to the ulnar collateral ligament of his elbow, he either kept trying to pitch through the pain, or he retired. But in 1974 orthopedic surgeon Frank Jobe replaced pitcher Tommy John?s ligament with a tendon from John?s arm. And John pitched in the major leagues until 1989. So many pitchers have performed so well after Tommy John surgery, some young pitchers have considered having it done electively.

The usual answer I get is that surgical procedures merely allow the athlete to return to his or her previous, natural condition. They do not enhance anybody?s performance. Which seems reasonable?until I wonder whether it was natural for some athletes to break down under the stress when other athletes stay whole.

Speaking of what?s natural, let?s talk about my all-time favorite Olympic athlete, seven-time cross-country skiing medalist Eero M?ntyranta. Because M?ntyranta, who competed for Finland in the 1960s, was straight out of Xavier?s School for Gifted Youngsters.

M?ntyranta has a genetic condition that can bring about fantastic increases in red blood cells, hemoglobin and oxygen-carrying capacity. Which is a pretty terrific thing for an endurance athlete to have. (Much, much better than an extra finger on each hand.)

Actually it?s blood doping, but natural. Well, it?s natural if a mutation is natural. And although most world-class athletes probably won?t have a single major M?ntyranta-like mutation, I would bet they have a constellation of uncommon, performance-enhancing genetic constructs. So if users of performance-enhancing drugs are disqualified, should holders of performance-enhancing mutations be barred, too? Stop levitating the poker, Magneto, I?m just asking.

World News - Murderer's corpse dragged from car, eaten by bear in ...

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

The body of a missing convicted murderer was dragged out of a car by a bear that ate part of it and buried the rest, authorities in Canada said Saturday, according to reports.

Rory Nelson Wagner, 53, was out on parole from a murder sentence when he vanished from Kamloops, British Columbia, on May 23, CTV reported.

The black bear was later euthanized by conservation officers, CTV said late Saturday.

The Vancouver Sun said Wagner and two others were charged with killing a man who they believed had sexually assaulted their family member.

Wagner eventually pleaded guilty to murder and was convicted in 1996,?according to BCLocalNews.com.?Parole documents show the murder victim was charged with the sexual assault but found not guilty shortly before the killing.

Hunters came across the remains after finding an abandoned Volkswagen Jetta on a logging road.?The bear pulled Wagner?s corpse from the vehicle through an open window and buried him under a pile of dirt and vegetation.

When the hunters made the grisly find, the bear was still in the area, protecting the food stash, BCLocalNews reported.

Conservation officer Darcy MacPhee told CTV: ?The bite mark measurements that we had from the body matched perfectly with the teeth on that [euthanized] bear, so we were confident that we had the animal that had been feeding on this person.?

There were conflicting reports about whether Wagner had committed suicide in the car, ahead of?autopsy and toxicology tests to determine the likely cause of death.

"It's not going to be particularly difficult. In any case, it does take several weeks for toxicology results to come back. It's fairly standard," coroner Mark Coleman told the Vancouver Sun.

Tips And Tricks To Make Your Own Solar Panel - News and Society

Who knows the amount of individuals are influenced by green living because it has the power to produce such an effect. We see so many examples in our everyday lives, and it can function as an significant reminder. Still as with quite a few things, there is far more to it and some things should be thoroughly thought about. There is adequate understanding surrounding this so people know what to anticipate. But when you can uncover all you can and learn, then you will find yourself in a greater position. That is why we want to provide you with some appropriate tips about green living, and with any luck, they will help you in the future.

?

Saving money on your power bill and helping our planet is just one of the primary reasons people are making the switch to using solar energy for their electricity needs. Ever since I heard about the favorable feedbacks of solar power, I began using it in my own home and endorsing it to my ultrasound technician co-workers. Obviously for people who go out and buy a solar panel system from a retailer you might find the you could end up spending thousands of dollars in order to have this installed on your house. For those of you who want to switch over to solar energy you?re going to find that if you build these systems yourself you?ll be able to save a lot of money off the list price. If you decide that you would like to build your own solar panel system you are going to be pleased to know we are going to tell you the products which will be needed to make this work.

?

The solar energy panels will generally be the most expensive part of your system, but you will be able to save loads of money on these if you opt to build them yourself. Creating your own solar panels is something that is actually a lot easier than you may think, and you?re going to discover that there are programs available on the internet that can educate you on precisely how to build the solar power panels. If you opt to build your own solar panels you are able to do so for less than $200 each, compared to the $500 to $1000 you would need to pay to invest in these panels at suggested retail price.

?

Batteries are also one more thing you are going to need simply because you?ll want to be able to store some of your energy for when the sun is not shining. In relation to the batteries you obtain for your solar panel system your best bet is to ensure you are getting deep cycle batteries as these will be far more effective. With regards to the size of the system you generate will depend on how many batteries you need but you should have the ability to pick up each battery for less than $100.

?

Now that you have read through this far, has that stirred your views in any way? Green living is an area that provides a tremendous amount for those who are serious or need to learn. A lot of people have found certain other areas are beneficial and contribute excellent information. A lot of things can have an effect, and you should expand your scope of knowledge. Try evaluating your own unique requirements which will help you further refine what may be necessary. You have a solid base of a few essential points, and we will make that much stronger for you as follows.

?

Buying a charge controller is another thing you are going to need in order to allow the sun to charge your batteries. If you decide not to get one of these things you are going to discover that hooking the solar power panels directly up to the batteries is something which will ruin the batteries and perhaps cause explosions. A power inverter is something else you?re going to need as this will be the only way you will be able to develop household current from the 12 volts that are in your batteries. According to just how much electricity you?re going to be needing will be determined by which size power inverter you?re going to need to produce this electricity.

?

If you would like to begin harnessing the power of the sun you?re going to discover that the items above will be needed. You ought to also take into account that if you would like to sell surplus electricity back to the power company you?ll need more items.

?

The above is only a modest slice from the overall as it concerns green living. As usual, you can increase your efforts when your knowledge is more comprehensive and deeper. What we will do is go into much deeper are more subtle points that will give you a greater understanding and more advantage. When you are reading through more, keep your own circumstance in mind at all times.

Oncothyreon Announces Presentation of PX-866 Clinical Data at ...

Oncothyreon (NASDAQ: ONTY) announced Saturday that data from two clinical trials of PX-866, a pan-isoform phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase inhibitor, were presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago. Oncothyreon also provided an update on the status of its ongoing Phase 2 development program for PX-866.

Phase 1 Trial of PX-866 in Combination with Docetaxel
Data from the Phase 1 portion of the ongoing Phase 1/2 of PX-866 in combination with the chemotherapeutic agent docetaxel (Taxotere?) were presented by Antonio Jimeno, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Colorado Cancer Center, Aurora, Colorado. The trial enrolled 43 patients with advanced cancer for whom docetaxel was considered standard of care. Patients were treated at three different dose levels of PX-866 administered daily in combination with the standard dose of docetaxel (75 mg/m2) administered once every three weeks. No dose-limiting toxicities were identified, and the recommended Phase 2 daily dose of PX-866 to be given in combination with docetaxel was determined to be the same as the single agent daily maximum tolerated dose of 8 mg.

The combination of PX-866 and docetaxel was generally well-tolerated, with most adverse events being mild to moderate in severity. The safety profile for combination treatment was consistent with that for either drug administered alone. Combination treatment had no impact on the pharmacokinetic profile of either drug.

Thirty-three patients were evaluable for response, defined as having undergone at least two cycles of therapy and a follow-up tumor assessment. In these patients, the disease control rate (partial response or stable disease) was 85 percent (28/33) after two cycles of therapy and 58 percent (19/33) after four cycles. Ten patients were on study for more than 200 days, five of whom remained on therapy at the time of the report. Nine patients with stable disease or better discontinued docetaxel after four or more cycles and continued on single agent PX-866, including all five remaining on therapy. No statistically significant differences in progression-free survival were identified for patients with PIK3CA mutations or PTEN deficiency.

Phase 2 Trial of PX-866 in Patients with Glioblastoma Multiforme
Interim data from an open-label single-arm Phase 2 trial of PX-866 in patients with glioblastoma multiforme, a type of brain cancer, were presented by Marshall W. Pitz, M.D., of CancerCare Manitoba, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Phase 2 trial is being conducted at 7 Canadian centers by the NCIC Clinical Trials Group, Queen's University in Kingston, Canada, in patients whose brain tumor is in first relapse during or following primary therapy. The trial has a two-stage design, with progression to the second stage dependent upon achieving a pre-specified endpoint of response or lack of early progression.

Seventeen patients were enrolled in the first stage of the trial and were included in this presentation. PX-866 was well-tolerated in the study, with the most common adverse events being diarrhea and reversible liver enzyme elevation. All patients were evaluable for response, with one patient having a partial response and six patients with stable disease, three of whom remained on therapy at the time of the report. These efficacy data met the pre-specified endpoint, and the trial is currently enrolling a planned additional 15 patients in the second stage.

PX-866 Phase 2 Program Update
In addition to the above mentioned trial in patients with GBM, the NCIC CTG is also conducting a Phase 2 trial in up to 40 patients with metastatic or recurrent castration resistant prostate cancer who have not received prior chemotherapy. The primary endpoint of this single-arm screening trial is the proportion of patients with lack of disease progression at 12 weeks from the initiation of therapy with PX-866. The trial has a two-stage design, with progression to the second stage dependent upon achieving a pre-specified endpoint of lack of early progression. The trial has completed enrollment in the first stage of the study and the interim analysis is currently pending.

The Phase 1/2 trial of PX-866 in combination with docetaxel mentioned above has advanced to the Phase 2 portion, which is an open-label, randomized evaluation of the antitumor activity and safety of PX-866 administered at the recommended daily dose in combination with docetaxel, versus docetaxel alone, in two groups of patients. Group 1 is enrolling patients with non-small cell lung cancer receiving second or third line treatment. Group 2 is enrolling patients with locally advanced, recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck after failure of prior therapy. The two groups will be randomized and evaluated independently. Enrollment of a planned 88 patients in the NSCLC group is currently expected to be completed this month. Additional centers are being added to the SCCHN arm of the trial, with a goal to complete enrollment of 82 patients in the first half of 2013.

Oncothyreon has also advanced to the Phase 2 portion of a Phase 1/2 trial of PX-866 in combination with the chimeric monoclonal antibody cetuximab (Erbitux?), which is an open-label, randomized evaluation of the antitumor activity and safety of PX-866 administered at the recommended daily dose in combination with cetuximab, versus cetuximab alone, in two groups of patients. Group 1 is enrolling patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who have a history of progression or recurrence following prior treatment with irinotecan and oxaliplatin containing regimens or who are intolerant of irinotecan. Over 50 of a planned 80 patients are currently enrolled in this arm of the trial, with enrollment currently expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2012. Group 2 is currently enrolling patients with incurable progressive, recurrent or metastatic SCCHN. The two groups will be randomized and evaluated independently.

Oncothyreon also recently announced the initiation of a Phase 1/2 trial of PX-866 in combination with vemurafenib (Zelboraf?). The Phase 1 portion of this trial will evaluate the safety and tolerability of PX-866 in combination with twice daily oral administration of vemurafenib in up to 36 patients with any BRAF-mutant cancer. The Phase 2 portion of the trial will compare the anti-tumor activity and safety of PX-866 and vemurafenib at the doses recommended from Phase 1 with vemurafenib alone administered at the approved dose. This randomized Phase 2 trial is expected to enroll 110 patients with advanced BRAF-mutant melanoma and has a primary endpoint of progression-free survival. This Phase 1/2 trial is being conducted in collaboration with the Melanoma Research Foundation Breakthrough Consortium.

Stub Stewart State Park opens mountain bike trails | OregonLive.com

Stub Stewart State Park unveils the start of something good for mountain bikers when it opens the park system?s first bike-specific trails and freeride features Saturday during the annual Oregon State Parks Day celebration.

The park is in Washington County, on Oregon 47 between Banks and Vernonia. Two mountain bike clubs have been working with the park to create five miles of cross-country trails, plus beginner and intermediate terrain parks. The park will need another year to double the size and complete all planned trails.

A group ride is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday to celebrate the occasion, leaving from the park?s Hilltop day-use area.

In honor of State Parks Day, day use and camping in standard sites is free at all Oregon state parks today. The U.S. Forest Service also waives its fees today at recreation sites in honor of National Trails Day. Check out a complete list of today?s state park activities or National Trails Day events.

The Justin Bieber Workout: Boxing, Running & Eating Healthy ...

A video of Justin Bieber and Mike Tyson boxing is creating quite a buzz around the Web. And it has us wondering what exactly the young singer?s fitness routine is.

Rumors have circulated that as the teen star matures in his career, he seeks out new role models such as Tyson and fellow pop star Usher. With these new friendships come new activities, such as boxing sessions as Tyson?s personal gym.

This seems to fit Bieber?s personality as fitness has always been a part of his life despite a busy schedule. The singer has managed to stay in tip-top shape by making time for his workouts even though the past few years have been a whirlwind of concerts, video shoots, and countless TV appearances promoting his music.

After releasing his first album, Bieber went straight to performing his hits around the world, and was on and off tour for about a year. Globetrotting is just a part of Justin?s life and he has had to make adjustments to accommodate his hectic lifestyle. In order to do so, the star hired personal trainer Dolvett Quince to keep him in shape for his most recent tour; Quince is now a trainer on The Biggest Loser.

Bieber?s fitness routine isn?t far from your average teenager?s. Cardio training is important to the singer, so he runs for 15 to 20 minutes and also practices high intensity interval training (HIIT). Sources say he also loves to run without a shirt on, much to his female fans? delight. Weight training and upper body strength building are two other key elements of Bieber?s routine, and his trainer also stresses the importance of stretching both before and after a workout.

When he isn?t in the gym, the star also enjoys playing sports like basketball, football, and golf with friends to stay in shape.

Eating well is another factor in Bieber?s healthy lifestyle. He can?t eat all the junk food he pleases because it can reportedly affect his voice. By no means does that mean that he eats carrots and celery all day, but the star does enjoy an occasional splurge on junk food. And at just 18 years old, Bieber is still growing and his body needs plenty of nutrients from a healthy diet.

As the world has watched Beiber grow in both his career and stature over the past several years, so have we. And we look forward to seeing how he continues to incorporate healthy habits into his hectic lifestyle. But in the meantime, we can be sure to see Bieber flashing his toned abs to the world in magazine spreads because of his dedication to working out and eating healthy.
