Fear Emotions ? Positive or Negative? | Team Motivation

What is fear?s purpose? How do you handle it? While I am working in my pest control business, I meet people on an almost daily basis who are influenced by negative fear thoughts regarding pests invading their premises. A good size spider, rat, or unexpected insect can set someone off pretty quickly, and literally immobilize them. It consumes their thoughts to the point where they have trouble thinking about anything else.

Thinking about why people do this, makes me wonder about the purpose of Fear emotions. I really started wondering as to how many people really do allow Fear, anxiety, worry, etc. to freeze them into inaction in everyday life. They achieve a very negative result, one which I have to think, is not what they really want.

Fear ? What is it?s purpose? Do you let fear immobilize you or do you act in spite of it, safely, consciously aware of why it is there?

Personally, I look upon fear as a positive emotion. I know that uncontrolled this emotion can breed many negative results. But when controlled, this emotion can spur you into action like no other I know of. And I think that this is truly the reason for fear. Think of it as your best friend, preparing you for progress. Make friends with the unknown.

We should acknowledge the fear we are experiencing. Allow that it is a positive thing within us that warns us of some impending danger or harm. And then, analyze it to see if it is real or imagined, justified or not. When we recognize it?s positive intent, it is no longer something to immobilize us, but quite the reverse, we can jump into action to remedy ?why? we are fearful.

I think that it is the inaction bred by over-analyzing, by focusing on the fear, actually dwelling on it, imagining the ?what ifs?, that keeps us from taking the actions necessary to move though it. We need to process it, not dwell in it. I?m sure everyone has heard the old expression, ?A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave person, only one.? We do not want to hold the

FEAR thought. That is not what it is there for.

As long as we focus on the positive intent a fearful state represents, rather on the fear itself, we can question ourselves as to what this fear is trying to tell us to do, and take the necessary actions to protect ourselves or blast us though this perceived barrier.

All we have to know is, `What is really going on here?? What do I need to do in order for me to feel better about moving forward? Or do I really need to back off from this course? Do I need to take another smaller action (baby step) or do I just need to change my perception about what is going on here?

Then, move forward in some direction no matter how small a step it seems. Usually just taking action and the momentum you gain and feel, will free you from the fearful, concerned, worried feeling you had.

Do you have something bothering you, or something you have been putting off, or dreading? Something you know you must do, but just haven?t been able to face up to the task? Break it down until there is something you can move forward with. Take it in baby steps, take action. Do it and then celebrate the victory! Feel your confidence grow!

Your mind can only hold one thought at a time. Make it an action thought that empowers you.

This is only one person?s opinion, but I feel it is better to believe in something beneficial that I can take control of, rather than be at it?s mercy!.

Instead of moving a highway and transit bill that will put Americans to work -- a move the Senate was able to pull off by a vote of 74 to 26 -- House leaders want to punt with another short-term extension.

There is an easy solution to this problem -- the House can take up the Senate's bipartisan bill (MAP-21) and put millions to work and improve our surface transportation system. President Obama will sign that bill tomorrow.

Instead, the House GOP has wasted months trying to find the votes for its deeply flawed five-year bill that we described in February as a "grab-bag for K Street lobbyists and their corporate clients at the expense of public transit, Amtrak and transportation safety." Not surprisingly, they don't have many takers for their plan outside those K Street lobbyists.

The Senate has handed the House a gift box filled with good jobs for an economy still suffering from high unemployment. When someone offers you a gift, good manners and common sense dictate you take it. Yet it seems all we hear about is another short-term extension. Obviously, both chambers must pass an extension to avoid the funding lapse and job loss that would occur if the program expires. But that misses the point.

This would be the 9th such extension in less than three years. Is anyone else having a d? j? vu moment here thinking of the years of brinksmanship around the completion of an FAA reauthorization bill? Twenty-two times Congress had to pass an extension that delayed major air safety improvements, stymied much needed airport and air traffic control expansion and modernization, and stalled tens of thousands of construction jobs.

The House needs to end the stalemate and pass MAP-21 or strip the wrongheaded provisions from H.R. 7 and get to a Conference Committee with the Senate. The economy needs this bill -- it is the backbone for our system of surface freight and passenger commerce; it is the elixir for our fragile economy as 14 million people still look for work; it will provide transit systems and their workers new tools to weather recessions, and it will boost American manufacturing.

That's why our members will be mobilizing around a simple message to the House: "Get Moving." Yes, get moving on passing the Senate surface transportation bill -- recovering and rebuilding our transportation system and economy.

Those were ?Dancing With the Stars? host Tom Bergeron?s words to pro Tony Dovolani as the hoofer and his celeb partner, tennis legend Martina Navratilova, became the first pair eliminated from season 14 of the ballroom bash.

Sorry indeed. For once again, the likable pro was paired with a star who couldn?t take him farther in the competition. (But hey, at least Martina was very pleasant, unlike past partners who left the pro angry and frustrated.)

For her premiere dance, Martina delivered a flawed, 20-point foxtrot head judge Len Goodman called ?too careful.? Her week two performance, the jive, lacked attack and wasn?t much better. In fact, the judges gave her a paltry score of 17. Judge Bruno Tonioli even told her, ?I think that serve went into the net. You couldn?t keep up with the dance.? And Carrie Ann Inaba couldn?t find much to praise about it. ?That was sad,? the judge said before adding, ?I loved your attitude!? Ouch.

And the tennis great knew she had screwed up. ?I blew it like I haven?t blown it!? she said after her performance. ?I can?t believe I did that.?

Not surprisingly, her subpar performances landed her at the bottom of the leaderboard both weeks, with a total score of 37 out of 60.

Though her dance moves lacked the grace and precision that she delivered on the tennis courts, Martina had poise to spare and didn?t play the blame game when she said her goodbyes. ?It was an amazing experience,? she said of her short stint on ?Dancing.? ?I just wish it had lasted longer. I gave it everything I had, but I blew it yesterday.?

On the subject of ?blowing it,? fans of the show might also note that the judges screwed up the first two weeks of this season by appearing to grade certain pairs by different standards. Yes, we?re talking about Melissa Gilbert and pro partner Maks Chmerkovskiy, who were criticized for their ambitious and not-all-that-bad dances, while others who made more obvious goofs (including missed steps) scored higher and received encouragement from the panel.

But it was the actress and the ballroom bad boy who were triumphant for this first elimination round. The two were the first pair Tom announced as safe for the week. With that revelation, Maks broke into a huge grin and excitedly pumped his fist into the air. It was perhaps the happiest we?ve seen the pro since the judges started nitpicking his partner in week one.

He wasn?t the only one to be uber excited to advance to the third week. When ?View? co-host Sherri Shepherd learned her fate, she busted out with a wild celebratory dance that left the others in awe of her energy.

And speaking of energy, expect the ballroom to sizzle next week! Cuban actor William Levy, who earned many new fans when he debuted on ?Dancing? with one of the sexiest performances ever seen on the show, revealed he?ll be dancing the salsa for personal stories week. Muy caliente!

EMCO Software has delivered a free update for EMCO WakeOnLan 1.2 allowing running the application on Windows PCs with installed .NET Framework 4.0. The new version of the application is compatible with the latest versions of .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.0 and can work on systems running .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and above. EMCO Software has also announced a future support of .NET Framework 4.5, which will be distributed by default with the upcoming Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server operating systems. The compatible version of EMCO WakeOnLan will be released before the Windows 8 Release to Manufacturers (RTM), which is expected later on this year.

EMCO WakeOnLan 1.2 is designed to help network administrators and IT professionals using the Wake-on-LAN (WOL) technology in networks of any sizes, including small office, enterprise and distributed networks. The free version of EMCO WakeOnLan is the first and only freeware solution optimized for managing groups of computers across a network. Network administrators can use it for free to power on computers remotely at the start of a working day, to install security patches and updates, or in other cases when computers should be turned on remotely.

EMCO WakeOnLan works as a Windows application with GUI allowing network administrators to entirely automate Wake-on-LAN tasks. It automatically performs all the steps that should be made to wake up selected computers, including network enumeration, collecting MAC addresses from network computers and sending WOL packets. Unlike various command-line WOL utilities, EMCO WakeOnLan is capable of detecting MAC addresses of remote PCs automatically using different methods suitable for different situations and network environments. It saves administrators the effort of writing scripts to extract the MAC addresses information and maintaining the MAC addresses database in case the network environment is changing. Another unique feature of EMCO WakeOnLan, which distinguishes it from other Wake-on-LAN solutions available today, lies in its ability to manage multiple computers in parallel to increase performance, which is critical when managing large networks. ?Usually, Wake-on-LAN utilities are designed to work with a single computer only. It?s really difficult to use them for waking up a group of computers in a large network. For IT departments adopting Wake-on-LAN technology in large enterprise networks, EMCO Software offers a commercial version of EMCO WakeOnLan. This version introduces a concept of WOL tasks configured once and executed anytime on demand or automatically on schedule. Survey of the States 2011: The State of Economic and Personal Finance Education in our Nation?s Schools

?Just as it was not possible to live in an industrialized society without print literacy ? the ability to read and write ? so it is not possible to live in today?s world without being financially literate. To fully participate in society today, financial literacy is critical.?

The Survey of the States is a biennial report from the?Council for Economic Education that brings attention to the critical importance of economics and personal finance education by documenting its status in the fifty states and the District of Columbia.

The recent economic downturn has brought nationwide attention to the dangers of a financially illiterate society. The 2011 Survey shows that while there has clearly been progress since the first Survey in 1998, that over the last two years, the trend is slowing and in some cases moving backwards.

The survey can facilitate an important dialogue that must take place between those who recognize that this knowledge is critical for young people and the decision makers that can effect change.

Key Findings

• The number of states that now require students to take an economics course as a high school graduation requirement increased from 21 in 2009 to 22 in 2011.
• However, only 16 states require the testing of student knowledge in economics, 3 fewer than in 2009.
• No improvement has been seen in the area of personal finance. The number of states that require students to take a personal finance course (or personal finance included in an economics course) as a high school graduation requirement remains at 13.
• Only 2 more states now require that personal finance content standards be implemented, bringing the total to 36.

Australia bans Chinese company from Web network

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australia has banned Chinese technology giant Huawei from bidding to help build a nationwide high-speed Internet network due to concern about cyber attacks traced to China.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Monday the move was among "prudent decisions" to ensure the planned network functions properly.

The ban highlights concern about Beijing's cyber warfare efforts, a spate of hacking attempts aimed at Western companies and the role of Chinese equipment providers, which are expanding abroad.

Huawei Technologies Ltd. is one of the world's biggest producers of switching equipment that forms the heart of phone and data networks. The company rejected suggestions it might be a security risk and said it has won the trust of global telecoms carriers.

Beijing's relations with Western governments have been strained by complaints about hacking traced to China and aimed at oil, technology and other companies. A U.S. congressional panel has said it will investigate whether allowing Huawei and other Chinese makers of telecoms gear to expand in the United States might aid Chinese spying.

The Australian attorney general's office told Huawei late last year it would be barred from bidding for work on the 36 billion Australian dollar ($38 billion) network, according to The Australian Financial Review newspaper. It said that decision was prompted by Australian intelligence officials who cited hacking attacks traced to China.

A spokesman for the attorney general's office said it could not comment on individual companies but a Huawei official confirmed the newspaper's account. He spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to disclose conversations between Huawei and the government.

Huawei expressed disappointment about the decision. It has operated in Australia since 2004 and said it already works with the country's major telecoms carriers.

"Huawei will continue to be open and transparent and work to find ways of providing assurance around the security of our technology," said a company statement.

China is Australia's biggest trading partner and Chinese demand for iron ore and other minerals has driven an Australian economic boom. But Canberra is uneasy about Beijing's rising military spending and growing assertiveness in Asia.

The United States and Australia announced plans in September to include cyber security in their 61-year-old defense alliance, the first time Washington has done that with a partner outside NATO.

President Barack Obama announced plans in November to send U.S. military aircraft and up to 2,500 Marines to Australia's north for a training hub to help allies and protect American interests across Asia.

Plans approved by Australian lawmakers in 2010 call for building a fiber-optic network to provide high-speed Internet access to 90 percent of the country's homes.

Huawei said it is building similar networks in Britain, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries.

"You don't get to that level of success unless you have customers that trust your company, your staff and your technology," the statement said.

Gillard, who was at a security conference in Seoul, said the planned Australian network is a crucial national project.

"You would expect, as a government, we would make all of the prudent decisions to make sure that that infrastructure project does what we want it to do, and we've taken one of those decisions," she said, when asked about Huawei.

Gillard gave no details of the reason for the decision.

Huawei was founded in 1987 by a former Chinese military engineer but says it has no connection to the military. The company says it is employee-owned but has released few details about who controls it, which has fueled questions abroad.

Huawei had been endorsed as a bidder on the Australian project by the technical department of the government-owned National Broadband Network Co., the Financial Review said. It said the attorney general blocked that after intelligence officials objected.

Huawei, based in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, reported revenues for the first half of last year of 98.3 billion yuan ($15.8 billion) and says its equipment is used in 140 countries.

In 2010, it was blocked from taking part in upgrading a U.S. phone carrier's network and last year was forced to unwind its acquisition of an American computer company after a security panel rejected the deal.

The U.S. House of Representatives intelligence committee said in November it would investigate whether allowing Chinese companies to expand in the United States might aid Chinese electronic spying.

It cited Huawei and rival ZTE Corp., another telecom equipment supplier, as being among the companies to be examined.

The panel said it will look into the role Chinese companies play in supplying components for U.S. telecoms systems and whether access to those systems might allow foreign governments to gather information.

Food and drink firms to cut calories | Top Stories | BigPond News

Some of Britain's biggest food and drink manufacturers, including Mars and Coca-Cola, have promised to cut the calorie content of their products. Seventeen companies have agreed to the Responsibility Deal, part of a Government initiative to combat obesity in Britain.

Coca-Cola Great Britain says it will cut calories by 30% in some of its soft drinks by 2014, while Mars say it will reduce the calorie count of their Mars chocolate bars from 260 to 250 calories by 2013.

Tesco says it will remove 1.8 billion calories from its soft drinks and, along with other supermarkets, will expand their range of low-calorie meals.

However, some healthcare professionals say it means almost nothing.

Cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra told Sky News: 'This translates to, for every individual, cutting down on 16 dry roasted peanuts per day.

'So the public can think for themselves, do they really think this is going to impact on a massive public health disaster? It's the food and drink industry paying lip service to the Government.

'I think the impact of this will be absolutely negligible. What needs to be introduced is legislation. I think legislation that has an impact.

'The Prime Minister has an open goal to show he is a man of substance who cares more about our children's health than the profits of food manufacturers.'

A third of 10 and 11-year-olds are now either overweight or obese in Britain, as are more than 60% of adults.

It has led to suggestions to introduce a tax on unhealthy foods.

Dr Susan Jebb, chair of the Responsibility Deal Food Network, said: 'I think this is an important element of an overall strategy to tackle obesity.

'We've got really solid commitments today, we have got to give time to see if those really pan out.

'We need more companies to come on board too. There may be a place for regulation but it would be in parallel with, attacking other elements of the problem. I think voluntary agreements have to be given an opportunity to work.'

Wife defends of soldier accused in Afghan rampage

SEATAC, Wash. (AP) ? The wife of a U.S. soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan villagers defended her husband in an interview with NBC's Today show, saying she finds the charges "unbelievable."

Karilyn Bales told Matt Lauer in comments set to air Monday that her husband, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, is "very brave, very courageous."

The Washington state woman said her husband joined the Army after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to "protect his family, friends and country. He wanted to do his part."

Officials say Staff Sgt. Bales wandered off base in southern Afghanistan earlier this month and killed eight Afghan adults and nine children.

The wife of the Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier said the accusations are "unbelievable to me."

"He loves children, he's like a big kid himself," she said. " I have no idea what happened, but he would not ... he loves children, and he would not do that."

He was formally charged Friday with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes.

U.S. investigators have said they believe Bales killed in two episodes, returning to his base after the first attack and later slipping away to kill again. He is reported to have surrendered without a struggle.

The 38-year-old married father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., is being held at a U.S. military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Karilyn Bales has spoken to her husband by telephone twice since he was detained. The soldier called his wife first from overseas shortly after massacre, and then last week from Fort Leavenworth where the two talked about family matters and "reaffirmed their love for each other," said her attorney, Lance Rosen.

The couple has two young children, a girl named Quincy and a boy named Bobby.

Bales was on his fourth tour of duty in a war zone, having served three tours in Iraq, where he suffered a head injury and a foot injury. His civilian attorney, John Henry Browne, had said the soldier and his family had thought he was done fighting.

The family has set up a defense fund to help pay for Bales' legal fees.

The Bales family had a Seattle-area home condemned, struggled to make payments on another and failed to get a promotion a year ago. Karilyn Bales put the family's Lake Tapps, Wash., home up for sale days before the rampage.

The youngest of five brothers, Bales grew up in the working class Cincinnati suburb of Norwood, Ohio, and has been described as cheerful, all around good guy. He joined the Army two months after 9/11, after a Florida investment business failed and after he had worked with a string of securities operations.

Let your kids in on your fitness routine. (Don?t have one? There?s the first step ? implement one!) Have them come along on your morning walk or run, or let them do a workout video with you. It might take some time to get them integrated, but it introduces them to the concept of regular workouts and the idea that exercise is fun. This also puts you in the position of positive role model for your kids.

Playtime = Fitness Time

Children are naturally playful. Engaging in free play is one of the best ways to encourage them to get in shape and develop healthy habits. Toddlers like to dance and be active at all kinds of play, as do preschoolers. Older kids may enjoy playing sports or just running races with their friends.

If it?s snowing, get the kids to go outside and play in it; in the fall, rake leaves into piles and jump in. Spring and summer provide all kinds of outdoor possibilities. The point is to deliberately integrate active play time into your child?s day.

Make the Time

Because we tend to expect fitness to come naturally to kids, many families neglect to schedule it in. But these days, that?s an important step. Make sure your kids have the time to be active and move around. Sometimes, we spend a lot of our day telling our children to be still, be quiet, pay attention, and so forth. Try to schedule in some time when your child can be physically active.

Playgrounds

Playgrounds exist for a reason ? play! Make it a point to take your child to a playground several times a week. Make playdates with other moms and kids if you like, and make it a regular thing. When the weather gets bad, see if you can continue your habit in an indoor play area, community center gym, or church fellowship hall.

Family Sports

Signing your kids up for sports is a great idea, but if your child is the shy type, he or she may benefit more from family sports. Also, if the family participates, it encourages Mom and Dad to exercise, too.

Chandler: Can Tebowmania, Linsanity coexist?

It was almost exactly a year ago that astronomers studying data from the Kepler telescope witnessed something never before seen: two planets sharing the same orbit around their star. The two planets are part of a four-planet system dubbed KOI-730, and they circle their sun every 9.8 days at exactly the same distance: kind of what it must look like watching Rex Ryan and his brother, Rob, circling the buffet at Golden Corral. But it also bolsters the widely-held theory that Earth once shared an orbit with another like-sized planet, and that the two collided ? a chunk of the pulverized loser becoming our moon.

Fast-forward to 2012 AD, where we find two other planets now in the same orbit. Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow are more than just superstars ? they are celestial sports memes, with their own gravity, weather systems and jersey racks at Modell?s. And both are now in the same city, after Tebow was sent by the Broncos to the New York Jets for a few draft choices and a handful of magic beans. I wouldn?t toot my own horn even if I could, but I was one of the first to wonder, way back in early February, what would happen when the NBA season met the NFL season and Linsanity and Tebowmania overlapped. Solar storms? Fish raining from the sky? A silent movie winning the Oscar? The answer of course is, all of these. But little did I know that it would come six months early, and in the same city.

Of course only one will prevail: Tebowmania and Linsanity cannot co-exist indefinitely. But which will survive?

The paths that Lin and Tebow took to reach the Big Apple are remarkably similar. Both were undervalued when they arrived in the pros, but eventually proved their worthiness under fire. Both captured the imagination of a city, and then the nation and the world, with a combination of unexpected athleticism and aw-shucks naivete. Both elicit the same emotions you get when you see a dog driving a car ? it?s unexpected, it?s cute, and it?s proven darned useful for the dog?s owner. It?s like that episode of Cheers when Woody ran for city council and won. We love seeing wholesome over-achievers triumph.

The fact that both wear their religious beliefs on their sleeves helps a lot. Despite our cynicism, many of us still like to believe that God us up there working the levers. How else to explain that Broncos? win over the Steelers? And look, even though I coached Jeremy Lin in middle school, even I didn?t imagine him outscoring Kobe Bryant head-to-head.

But basic laws of nature tell us that one will eventually come out on top. There can be only one dominant playground bully, only one hottest-girl-in-school. We see it with wolves and Bighorn Sheep, gorillas and even the walrus: there can be only one alpha male. Eventually, Linsanity and Tebowmania will collide, and one will be smashed to bits and cast into deep space, perhaps a modest chunk remaining to become a colony for President Gingrich. But which one? Let?s look at the data.

Tim Tebow:

• Projected to be Mark Sachez?s backup, where he will presumably be used to run the Wildcat formation. And as we all know, that?s one step from becoming a tight end, or retirement.

• His new teammates are already throwing him under the bus.

• Things never end well for guys named Tim in New York. See: The Life and Times of Tim on HBO.

Jeremy Lin:

• Unlike Tebow, plays at a proficient level for four quarters.

• Has the important Spike Lee endorsement.

• Actually plays in New York.

• When he arrived in New York, had to survive on the mean streets of his brother?s couch.

• No Rex Ryan swearing at him day and night.

New York is populated with superstars, celebrities and national memes. Eli Manning and the New York Giants are the reining Super Bowl champs. A-Rod and Derek Jeter control their own Yankees fiefdoms. Woody Allen is a legendary inhabitant, sort of a Jewish Gandalf. And Donald Trump perches atop Trump tower, overseeing all like a gargoyle with a red combover. But the biggest of them all by far are the wonder twins, Lin and Tebow. They are the only ones big enough to have their own gravitational pull.

But I predict that a year from now, Tebow will be a distant memory, or a Jacksonville Jaguar. I?m not saying that New York will eat him alive, like some are maintaining ? as if we?ll soon be seeing Tebow exiting a cab with Lindsey Lohan, and weeping softly while sitting on a stool on Dr. Phil. He?ll remain his usual, chaste self. He?s not Gronkowski.

But I also don?t think that Tebowmania has the candlepower to shine with Linsanity when both are switched on in the same room. Tebow will fade a bit to the background, joining Eli, A-Rod, Jeter, and Gargoyle Trump. All are bonified New York celebrities, but there can only be one alpha male.

The only one officially on record in all of this so far is Lin. Washington Post:

If Lin, who said he?s only talked to Tebow once, feels challenged by Tebow?s arrival, he isn?t saying so. ?It?s awesome. I?m just excited for him and to see what he does,? Lin said. ?We?ll see what happens next year, but I?m excited obviously that he?s going to be in New York.?

In that same story, a reader poll rated Linsanity as more likely to prevail over Tebowmania, 72 percent to 28 percent. Much of that may be due to this being basketball season, and the fact that Tebow has not had a chance to prove himself.

Nor will he, in my opinion. Nothing against Tebow: he?s a fine lad, with a lot to offer. It?s just that there?s only room for one main protagonist in Gotham. And in time, that will play out.
