NEW YORK — On Sunday night, Russell Brand took the stage at Amnesty International's Secret Policeman's Ball at Radio City Music Hall in New York. It marked one of his most high-profile appearances since his split from Katy Perry. Instead of focusing on the past, Brand focused on the funny and on the cause at hand when MTV News caught up with him on the red carpet.

Walking the carpet with friend and fellow comedian Noel Fielding, Brand didn't save all the jokes for the stage. "There's danger in there," he said of Fielding's satchel, before continuing, "And I've been, you know how sea horses lay their eggs and then another sea horse has to bring it up, I've just left a load of sea horses up and down this carpet then waiting for some other sea horses [to come along]."

He later defined why he and his fellow funny people had gathered for the event. "It's for freedom of speech, don't have political prisoners, let people say what they want," Brand said.

The gathering, which celebrated free speech and Amnesty International's 50th anniversary, also included appearances from Rashida Jones, Bill Hader, Jon Stewart and Paul Rudd, to name a few. It aired live on Epix, for those who couldn't make it. "[It's a] secret, though, otherwise they'll start showing up in droves," Brand jokingly added before the fun all kicked off inside the famed venue.

While the words "Katy" and "Perry" were never mentioned, Brand did share that he's been doing well. He said, "I've been all right, thank you."

He's been "all right" working on a number of projects, which include two films, "Rock of Ages" (out this June) and Diablo Cody's next flick (currently in production), as well as his forthcoming FX talk show.
